HWYCOM's sign support system is fiberglass-reinforced plastic hollow post composed of resin and glass fiber reinforcement. The finished sign support is a combination of flexibility - due to the memory of the fiberglass - and strength.

A pultrusion process, combining longitudinal and diagonal glass fibers with a resin that is continuously cured, produces the fiber reinforced tube. This results in a three-inch diameter post with a 1/8-inch wall thickness. The finished post is inserted into a TxDOT and FHWA approved sign support base.

HWYCOM'S breakaway sign support system has proven benefits not only for sign crews, but for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists as well as vehicle operators and vehicle occupants.

The system can be installed in a long-life reusable concrete foundation, or drivable base. Installation can be performed by a one-person crew, thus minimizing maintenance cost and the risk of worker injury. The single sign support is approved for up to, and including 16 square foot signs, and dual post systems are approved up to, and including 32 square foot signs.

The HWYCOM breakaway sign support system is approved by the Texas Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration for use on all streets and highways.

Additionally, the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University certified the units for compliance with NCHRP 350 on both single and double post small sign support installations.
